How to use coloring pages with 1st grade students
First graders benefit when coloring connects to reading. Choose a page related to a story, holiday, science topic, or classroom theme. Before coloring, identify three details in the picture; afterward, ask the student to write a caption or describe the beginning, middle, and end.
Print one test page first and use your printer's “fit to page” setting if the edges are clipped. Crayons are forgiving for younger students; colored pencils give older students more control. Markers may bleed through standard copier paper, so place scrap paper underneath or use heavier paper.
